Dubioza Kolektiv: the Bosnian band that gave its music away
Dubioza Kolektiv released their albums for free download long before streaming, and turned their concerts into some of the wildest parties in Europe. In June 2022 they played Murska Sobota.
In June 2022 Dubioza Kolektiv played Murska Sobota, bringing their mix of ska, punk, reggae, Balkan folk and electronics to Prekmurje. Photos are in the Dubioza Kolektiv gallery.
Born in Bosnia
Dubioza Kolektiv formed in 2003, when musicians from two bands, one from Zenica and one from Sarajevo, joined forces. Some of them had played music together since the war years, rehearsing in the dark when there was no electricity. Their self-titled debut came out in 2004.
Free music, on purpose
From their fourth album, 5 do 12, the band released records online for free, as a deliberate statement against the traditional music industry. Even after signing with a label, they made free downloads a condition. Their 2013 album Apsurdistan was downloaded hundreds of thousands of times, and the song "Free.mp3 (The Pirate Bay Song)" was featured on the homepage of the famous torrent site.
Songs with a point
Behind the party there is politics. Dubioza write about corruption, nationalism, migration and the absurdities of life in the Balkans, often in several languages in the same song. Tracks such as "No Escape (from Balkan)" turn serious subjects into anthems people dance to.
A festival band
Dubioza Kolektiv are at their best live. They have played major festivals across Europe, from Exit in Novi Sad to Pol'and'Rock in Poland, where they performed for a crowd of hundreds of thousands. Their shows are fast, loud and built for jumping, with the band constantly pushing the audience to go further.
Close to home
For audiences in Slovenia, Dubioza are a regional band in the best sense: they sing in a language most people here understand, and their humour about Balkan life lands immediately. Murska Sobota got the full show.
