Clutch: thirty years of the same four musicians

Rock bands rarely survive thirty years without a line-up change. Clutch have, and in June 2023 the Maryland band brought their heavy, groove-driven rock to Ljubljana.

In June 2023 Clutch played Ljubljana, bringing their mix of heavy riffs, blues swing and storytelling to Slovenia. Photos from the night are in the Clutch gallery.

The same four since 1991

Clutch formed in Germantown, Maryland, in 1991, and the line-up has never changed: Neil Fallon on vocals, Tim Sult on guitar, Dan Maines on bass and Jean-Paul Gaster on drums. That is rare in any genre and almost unheard of in rock. You can hear it in the way the band plays: tight, relaxed and completely sure of each other.

Hard to file under one genre

Clutch are often called stoner rock, but that only covers part of it. Their early records were closer to hardcore and metal, and over the years they added blues, funk and boogie. Gaster's drumming swings more than most rock drummers do, which gives even the heaviest songs a groove you can dance to.

Fallon is one of rock's great storytellers. His lyrics wander through American folklore, science fiction, history and absurd humour, delivered like a preacher at full volume.

Sunrise on Slaughter Beach

Their thirteenth album, Sunrise on Slaughter Beach, came out in September 2022 on the band's own label, Weathermaker Music. Running their own label since the late 2000s has given Clutch control over how and when they release music, and a loyal following that buys into the whole package.

A band built on the road

Clutch built their audience the old way: by touring constantly. They are known for changing the set list every night, which keeps the shows fresh for the band and gives fans a reason to see them again and again.
