Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band return to Vienna

In July 2023 Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna, one of the stadium dates on their European summer tour. For Vienna it was a long wait: Springsteen had not played the city since 2012. The Bruce Springsteen gallery has photos from the night.

The first tour in six years

The 2023 tour was the band's first since the end of The River Tour in Australia in February 2017. It opened with American arena dates in early 2023, crossed to Europe for stadiums from late April, and returned to North America later in the year. Demand was huge: more than a million tickets were sold for the international dates.

The band

The E Street Band is as much a part of the show as Springsteen himself. The 2023 line-up included Roy Bittan on piano, Nils Lofgren and Steven Van Zandt on guitars, Patti Scialfa, Garry Tallent on bass and Max Weinberg on drums, with Soozie Tyrell on violin, Jake Clemons on saxophone and Charlie Giordano on keyboards. Jake Clemons carries on the role of his uncle, Clarence Clemons, the band's original saxophonist, who died in 2011.

Three hours, every night

Springsteen shows are famous for their length and their energy. Even in his seventies he plays close to three hours, mixing anthems such as "Born to Run" and "Badlands" with songs from newer albums like Letter to You, released in 2020. The shows are built to end in a long run of hits that leaves stadiums singing.

Ernst Happel Stadion

Vienna's national stadium, named after the Austrian football coach Ernst Happel, is the city's home for the biggest concerts. With the Prater and its giant Ferris wheel nearby, a summer stadium show there is an event for the whole city.
